garden under the oaks

The first thing to think about when gardening under an oak tree is “what is happening IN the oak tree?” The oak tree is host to hundreds of native animal and insect species. Leaf drop from the oak continues this life cycle on the ground level.

So while it is possible and sometimes wonderful to plant under the oaks, it’s best to garden in a more natural format that allows you to “leave the leaves,” as they say in the Xerces Society.

We help you identify which plants will serve the needs of your trees, your ecology, and your people.
